This curriculum will offer an overview of the impacts of trauma on the child’s developing brain. Parents and caregivers will learn about dysmaturity, emotional dysregulation or delayed self-regulation, delayed self-control, and difficulties forming and maintaining relationships common to a trauma-impacted child. When parents and caregivers understand those common challenges, they will gain better understanding of the secondary behaviors that kids with a history of trauma may experience, such as lying, stealing, struggling to sleep, and more. Parents and caregivers will also learn how to view challenging behaviors through the lens of a child’s unmet needs or undeveloped skills that drive those behaviors. This information is the foundation to learn the strategies presented in the following modules of the Managing Behavior curriculum.

Relative caregivers will leave this meeting with a better understanding of the following topics.

• • The common impacts of trauma: dysmaturity, emotional dysregulation or delayed self-regulation, delayed self-control, and difficulties forming and maintaining relationships
  • The secondary behaviors that are rooted in trauma’s impacts
  • How to reframe a child’s challenging behaviors through the lens of trauma-informed parenting
